โš–๏ธ Encounter Difficulty Calculator

Will this fight be fair? Enter your party's levels, pick your monsters, and get a difficulty rating using the classic 2014 encounter-building math โ€” XP thresholds by level, monster XP by Challenge Rating, and the encounter multiplier for monster count. Everything runs in your browser: no account, no AI, works offline at the table.

2. Pick monsters

Searches the same monster registry the Encounter Builder uses โ€” the built-in creatures plus any SRD monsters you previously added on the DM screen (they stay saved in your browser, so this page works fully offline).

How the math works

1. Each character level has XP thresholds for Easy / Medium / Hard / Deadly (2014 DMG). Your party's thresholds are the sum of each character's โ€” anything below the Easy total is Trivial.

2. Each monster is worth XP based on its Challenge Rating (e.g. CR 1/2 = 100 XP, CR 2 = 450 XP).

3. The total monster XP is multiplied by the encounter multiplier for the number of monsters (ร—1 for one monster, ร—1.5 for two, ร—2 for 3โ€“6, ร—2.5 for 7โ€“10, ร—3 for 11โ€“14, ร—4 for 15+). The multiplier shifts one step up for parties of 1โ€“2 and one step down for parties of 6+.

Ratings are guidelines, not guarantees โ€” clever tactics, terrain, and magic items all change a fight. When in doubt with young players, aim for Easy or Medium.
